The Anne de Montmorency - Du Bot de Kerbot - Firmin Didot Book of Hours: Richly Illuminated Copy on Vellum dated 16 February 1522, with the Connétable's Monogram
Horae 119b in our Catalogue 75: Horae B. M. V. for the use of Paris. Paris, for Thielmann Kerver's widow (Yolande Bonhomme), 16.2.1522 (1523 n. st.). Illuminated copy on vellum.
The Anne de Montmorency - du Bot de Kerbot Book of Hours is one of the most important individualised editions in this collection: it is the only copy on vellum of this edition known to us and impresses with its elaborate book illumination, personalised for the commissioner, with delicate Renaissance gold frames in the style of the 1520s, as well as its high-ranking early provenance. Very likely created for the connétable Anne de Montmorency, who had himself represented six times with his monogram alone, the codex, which is decorated like a manuscript, went to Jean du Bot de Kerbot, "receveur" in Vannes, who is also prominently represented in the book by his coat of arms and his motto "SPES MEA DEUS". Later on it was in the famous collection of Firmin-Didot.
This book is part of the largest collection of printed Books of Hours in the world, which is offered for sale en bloc.
The collection has been extensively documented in Catalogues No. 50 & 75 (nine volumes), available in our online shop.
