A Hitherto Unknown Edition with Unique Use and Rare Illustration Sequence

Horae Alpha 1 in our upcoming Catalogue 100: Horae B. M. V. for the use of Chalon-sur-Saône. Paris, (Jean Dupré, around 1487). Coloured copy on vellum.

A highly interesting testimony to early illustrated Parisian book printing, moreover a previously unknown and wholly unique one: preserved in its original blind-stamped calf leather binding. The multi-zone woodcuts belong to an extremely rarely used series of images that was still considered unique in 2014 and only used in our No. Eta. By the discovery of the present copy, we are now able to expand our knowledge of this series of images.

This book is part of the largest collection of printed Books of Hours in the world, which is offered for sale en bloc.

The collection has been extensively documented in Catalogues No. 50 & 75 (nine volumes), available in our online shop. Catalogue 100, where the present copy will be described, will be published in the course of 2024.
