SOLD: Book of Hours for Queen Claude of France, Tours c. 1520-23
An extremely small illuminated manuscript on vellum, presumably owned by Claude of France, Duchess of Brittany, and Queen of France by marriage to Francis I. With 27 full or half-page miniatures by the Master of Claude de France. In a jewelled binding of gold and enamel, studded with 56 diamonds, from the Court of Emperor Rudolph II of Habsburg, in Prague c. 1600-1610 (est.)
The book’s diminutive size reflects the fashion of the French court around the turn of the sixteenth century, and provides the perfect frame for the artist’s characteristically delicate, detailed brushstrokes. With numerous references to the Queen, including abundant royal motifs, mottos, and emblems, this manuscript (along with Queen Claude’s Prayer Book in the Morgan Library) provides us with a rare glimpse at the exceptional work of one of the last great French illuminators.
In its marriage of fine miniature painting and opulent goldsmithery, this book of hours becomes a representative of two outstanding apogees from the late phase of the handwritten book.
From the collection of the Rothschild family. In pristine condition, and complete.
