Each year, March brings with it not only the awakening of Spring, but also the bustling excitement of TEFAF Maastricht, one of the highlights of our annual calendar.

In keeping with the theme of Spring’s renewal, we are extremely pleased to announce that our exhibition for TEFAF Maastricht 2020 will feature a brand new stand design that presents our exceptional books in a beautifully complementary setting, like the dazzling jewels they are.

On show this year will be a selection of breathtaking manuscripts new to the fair, including an illuminated luxury missal and pontifical on vellum (1490-95), commissioned by the Bishop of Autun. With 9 full-page or large miniatures, as well as 55 smaller miniatures by Guido Mazzoni (a.k.a. the Master of the Missal of Antoine de Roche), it also contains nearly 370 additional illuminated panel borders, and is in remarkable condition, with very large margins.

On show: Luxury Psalter, Bruges, c. 1270

Also on show will be the personal Book of Hours made for Queen Claude of France (1520-23). This illuminated manuscript on vellum contains 27 full or half-page miniatures in addition to the lavish borders on every page. It is bound in a gold binding with intricate colourful enamel decorations and 56 (!) diamonds. This complete and perfectly preserved treasure is a literal and figurative jewel in the crown of our collection.

In addition, we will be showcasing some precious examples from our world-renowned collection of printed Books of Hours, including a luxurious specimen made for King Louis XII by French printer and wood engraver Philippe Pigouchet and publisher Simon Vostre, one of the earliest and most important of Parisian printers.

Finally, we will be showing a number of marvellous highlights from our collection of French inlaid bindings, the subject of our latest Catalogue No. 84, « à compartiments ».
