From the Edition du Régent to the Inkblot Affair: a Century of the Longus novel in the French Illustrated Book. Our new catalogue, “Daphnis and Chloé”, is dedicated to a book that single-handedly serves as a chronicle of the history of French book illustration of the 18th century. It is hard to overstate just how important the Ancient Greek novel by Longus became for the development of book art during the 1700s in France and beyond. It was held in such high esteem that you would be hard-pressed to find an important collector’s library that didn’t contain at least one illustrated 18th century copy of the Hellenistic love story between Daphnis and Chloé.
