A Fully Illuminated Book of Hours with Borders in Camaieu d'or: Most likely made for King Charles VIII, with the First Dance of Death Series in a Printed Book of Hours: Unique

Horae Gamma in our Catalogue 75: Horae B. M. V. for the use of Paris. Paris, Jean Dupré, c. 1488, illuminated vellum copy.

A truly royal book that becomes a work of art on account of its sublime color scheme, and has no comparison at this early time of illustrated book printing in which it was created. These features suggest that it was intended for a highest-ranking person, likely (as the full-page miniature of Charlemagne suggests) for King Charles VIII himself.

This book is part of the largest collection of printed Books of Hours in the world, which is offered for sale en bloc.

The collection has been extensively documented in Catalogues No. 50 & 75 (nine volumes), available in our online shop.
