The Second Edition of Rüxner's Tournament Book: Originally Coloured and with Noble Provenance
Rüxner, Georg. ANfang / urspru(n)g unnd herkomen des Thurniers inn Teutscher nation. Simmern, Hieronimus Rodler, 1532. With 1 double-page woodcut illustration, 2 full-page coat of arms woodcuts, 40 mostly half-page woodcut illustrations and 247 coat of arms, all coloured by a contemporary hand.Folio (313 x 212 mm). Modern binding over wooden boards with pigskin spine.
The second edition of Rüxner’s tournament book from 1532 was more sparsely equipped than the first - it was evidently aimed at wider circles of the nobility. It is all the more remarkable that this copy was coloured throughout in blue, grey, black, brown, red, pink, green and yellow at the time of publication, which made the approximately 250 coats of arms precisely identifiable in the first place. The book comes from the old collection of the Alsatian barons of Fleckenstein. In very fine condition.
