Coloured by a contemporary hand: of the utmost rarity
The Speculum Passionis, published by the Nuremberg city physician Ulrich Pinder, is one of the most beautiful woodcut books of the period, illustrated by two of the leading artists of the time: Hans Schäufelein and Hans Baldung Grien, who previously worked in Albrecht Dürer's workshop. Accordingly, only the first leaves of Dürer's Large Woodcut Passion can be cited as models for this work, which is illustrated with 76 woodcuts, including 39 stunning full-page illustrations. In this spectacular copy of the first edition of 1507, all illustrations appear in rich and evocative original colouring. In fine condition.
Apart from the present copy, we are not aware of any other coloured copies in the last 40 years.
