The Salzburg Missal of 1506: With two Marvellous Woodcuts by Lucas Cranach the Elder, one full page and Illuminated on Vellum

With two woodcuts by Lucas Cranach the Elder, including a full-page representation of the Crucifixion, stunningly illuminated in gold and colors. - Folio (314 x 221 mm). Blindstamped original brown calf leather binding over wooden boards, with brass corner and center bosses and clasps.

A Renaissance Woodcut Masterpiece

The Salzburg Missal, printed by Johannes Winterburger in Vienna in 1506, reflects the rapid upswing of Vienna under Emperor Maximilian I also in the art of printing. The two woodcuts by Lucas Cranach the Elder are outstanding, especially the amazing illuminated full-page representation of the Crucifixion - his finest woodcut in a book - printed on vellum. The strictly contemporary, perfectly preserved Viennese binding, obviously by the Slatkonia Master for Winterburger, features characteristic intricate stamp decoration. Please note the entirely genuine blind-stamped spine.

Provenance: Previously auctioned at Hartung & Karl in Munich in 1985, this exceptional copy fetched the remarkable sum of DM 60,000 plus premium, acquired by H. P. Kraus.
